Thanksgiving Crafts for Children

"Paper Bag Turkey"

Thanksgiving crafts for children that are simple and fun!! Fancy centerpieces are nice, but this paper bag turkey draws the whole family into the holiday spirit.

Supplies You Need:

2 flat brown paper bags, 1 large and 1 smaller (not flat-bottomed grocery bags)

Newspaper

Masking tape

Scissors

10 brown pipe cleaners

Craft glue

Construction paper in brown, orange, red, and yellow

Tiny brown or black pom-poms

Directions:

1. Open the large bag and stuff with newspaper. Shape the bag to look like a turkey body with the tail pointing up (make sure you shape it so that it will sit on a table.) Leave enough of the bag empty so that you can twist the opening into a neck. Once twisted, secure the twist with masking tape

2. Do the same thing with the smaller bag for the head, but form the head to create a beak from one of the corners of the bag. Tuck the other corner on the top of the head to hide it

3. Take the two bags by their necks and join them together with masking tape. Cover the neck with pipe cleaners by wrapping them around the neck, then twisting one into the next. Trim off any excess pipe cleaners, then secure the last one with glue

4. Cut turkey feathers out of construction paper and attach them to the back of the turkey body with glue. Cut a waddle out of the red paper and attach it under the chin with glue. With the brown paper, make a small cone and attach it to the head for a beak. Glue the tiny pom-poms onto the turkey's face for eyes

TIP: Turkey Pictures can be made by tracing around a child's hand, adding feet, and then coloring the picture to look like a turkey!

TIP: Children can make a Thanksgiving Tablecloth by coloring their own version of the first Thanksgiving on a piece of butcher paper large enough to cover the table. Add a little color to the holiday table by having children draw funny faces with felt-tip pens on small gourds, or cutting "autumn leaves" out of colored paper. Then let the children arrange them into a centerpiece or scatter them around the table.
