Thanksgiving Crafts

"Fall Art"

Let's make Thanksgiving crafts out of nature. Use those leaves that you collect from a hike with your child. Spend an afternoon using Mother Nature's fall foliage to make "fall art."

Supplies You Need:

Brown kraft paper cut to 8-1/2 x 11 inches (or sized to fit a picture frame)

Masking tape

Variety of autumn leaves collected from a hike

Twigs

Craft glue

Brown crayon

Brown paint and paintbrush

Wooden frame

Directions:

1. Place the brown paper on the table and tape the corners down

2. Using the leaves and twigs, make an animal (a bird, butterfly, cat or dog), or whatever inspires you when you look at the leaf shapes

3. Glue the leaves into position and let them dry. Add any details with the brown crayon

4. Remove the glass and backing (with an adults help) and paint the frame. Let dry. Do not replace the glass; place the leaf art on backing and place inside of frame

TIP: You can make Thumbprint Place Cards for the Thanksgiving table by gently pressing a child's thumb against an ink pad and then pressing it onto a folded index card. With crayons or markers, children can draw on the turkey's head, legs, and tail feathers and then print guests name, or their own, on the place card. You can also use these for homemade invitations for a Thanksgiving party!

TIP: Children don't enjoy sitting at the table for long periods of time, so while the adults are finishing their dinner, ask the children to work on their own play about Thanksgiving. Provide a variety of old clothes for costumes. After the adults are finished with dinner, they can be the audience for the children's show.
