"Fantastic Birthday Ideas"

Fantastic birthday ideas for children ages 1 to 5. Awesome cakes that are simple to make, plus great munchie ideas and games that are sure to bring smiles to your child's party.

Your 1-year-old will enjoy colorful streamers and balloons and gaily wrapped gifts. As a matter of fact, the wrapping paper may provide more fun than the gifts themselves! Remember, balloons are dangerous toys for children of this age. You can use brightly colored beach balls as a playtime alternative.

Two-year-olds are very messy, so try to keep refreshments easy to eat. A great way to serve cake to young children is to make Cake Cones. Place flat-bottomed ice cream cones on a baking sheet or in muffin-tin cups; fill cones halfway with cake batter. (For a special surprise, put a maraschino cherry in the cone before adding the batter.) Bake according to the cupcake directions on the cake mix box. The cones can be frosted or decorated as desired.

At the age of 3, a cake with candles to blow out is a real treat. Have some matches handy in case the party guests blow out the candles for the birthday child. Use a paper tablecloth and partyware for easy clean-up.

"Beautiful Bonnet Cake"

Ingredients You Need:

1 package yellow cake mix (plus ingredients to make cake)

1 container vanilla frosting

Food color (optional)

13 vanilla cream-filled cookies

2 fruit snack roll-ups (3-feet long each)

Assorted candies (jordan almonds, jelly beans, or M & M's)

Candy spearment leaves (you can use store-bought tube frosting to make leaves and decorations)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray inside of Classic 2-quart batter bowl (found at arts and crafts store or Wal-Mart) with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Prepare cake mix according to package directions and pour into batter bowl.

3. Bake 55-60 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Remove and cool 15 minutes. Turn over batter bowl onto cooling rack and remove bowl. Cool completely before decorating.

4. To assemble bonnet, set cake with the large end down on a serving tray. Color frosting with food coloring, if desired. Using small spatula, spread cake with two thirds of the frosting. Surround cake with cookies to form a brim for the bonnet.

5. To decorate bonnet, remove fruit roll from paper. Starting at the center of fruit roll, place fruit roll around bottom of cake, crisscrossing ends, to resemble a ribbon. Make a bow with remaining fruit roll and place at crisscross. Trim ends of "ribbons" with kitchen shears. Use candies to make flowers on bonnet. Cut spearment leaves in half and add to flowers, or use decorating frosting to make leaves and decorate cookies.

TIP: Dad's Fishing Hat:

Great birthday ideas for dad, or Father's Day cake. Assemble cake with cookie brim as directed and frost cake. Decorate with candy gummy fish and worms. Use just one fruit roll to make a hat-band, trimming ends. Use your imagination!! Dad will love it!
