The shields made by the Plains Indians have traditionally been decorated with birds, animals, or other symbols to protect the shield-holder from harm. Have children be creative when decorating their shields.
Supplies You Need:
Corrugated cardboard
Small plates or drinking glasses (used for tracing)
Paper fasteners
Yarn
Paint
Directions:
1. Cut a large circle from corrugated cardboard (about 12" round)
2. Paint one side white and let dry
3. Trace around small plates or drinking glasses to make more circles on the cardboard
4. Paint animals or symbols inside the circles
5. When the paint is dry, push two paper fasteners through the cardboard (about 4-6" apart from the center of the large circle)
