Craft Ideas for Halloween

"Halloween Lanterns"

These fun and scary Halloween Lanterns are simple to make and make wonderful craft ideas for Halloween--the spookiest night of the year!! All you need is balloons and this great "home-made" paper-mache' recipe and, of course, your scary imagination!

Supplies You Need:

Flour

Water

Plastic Bucket

Balloons

Newspaper (torn into 3 x 5 inch strips)

String

Clothesline (or place to be able to hang and dry)

Straight pin

X-Acto knife

Orange acrylic paint

Medium paintbrush

Black tissue paper

Mod Podge glue

Phillips head screwdriver

String of fun Halloween lights (craft ideas for Halloween can be found at any arts and crafts store)

Orange or black pipe cleaner

Directions:

1. Mix 2 cups flour with 2 cups water in the plastic bucket to make a thick paste (Depending on how many Halloween lanterns you wish to make, you may need to adjust the quantity of flour and water.)

2. Blow up a balloon and tie a knot on the top, take strips of newspaper and dip into the paper mache' paste; apply one at a time to the balloon, overlapping pieces and covering the balloon completely with 3 to 4 layers

3. Cut a 2-inch length of string and tie to the knot on the balloon and hang it on the clothesline (or appropriate place) to dry for a day or two (repeat this step to make however many pumpkins you wish)

4. When the pumpkins are completely dry, pop the balloon with the straight pin, and use the X-Acto knife to cut an opening at the top to poke a light through

5. Paint the outside of the pumpkin with the orange acrylic paint and let dry on the clothesline for at least 1 hour

6. Cut out two triangles for the eyes, a longer triangle for nose, and a jagged grin for the jack-o'-lantern's mouth from the black tissue paper and glue to the pumpkin (for a long-lasing pumpkin that has a great glow, coat it with glue to seal the paint)

7. With the screwdriver, poke two holes about 3/4-inch apart on either side of the opening on the pumpkin. Cut the pipe cleaner in half and guide the pieces up and out through the holes. Twist once and hang on the string of Halloween lights, twisting the pipe cleaner around the light to hang
