Craft Ideas for Kids

"Recycled Piggy Bank"

Turn a 2-liter bottle into the cutest economic recovery package you'll ever see. Creative craft ideas for kids that will teach them the value of the dollar! A recycled "piggy bank."

Supplies You Need:

Paintbrush
Pink acrylic paint
2 toilet paper tubes
Pair of scissors
Pink tissue paper
Clean 2-liter plastic bottle
Mod Podge, or a mixture of 2 parts tacky glue to 1 part water
2 googly eyes
Pink two-holed button for the nose (about 5/8" wide)
Tacky glue
Pink pipe cleaner

Directions:

1. Paint the outside of both toilet paper tubes pink and half of the inside of one tube pink and set aside to dry

2. Cut the tissue paper into 1-1/4" squares (you can stack several sheets of the tissue paper and then cut them)

3. Brush a small section of the bottle with Mod Podge or diluted glue, and lay a square on it, brushing the Mod Podge on top of the square; repeat this process until the bottle, including the capped spout, is entirely covered; let dry

4. Cut two U shapes from the tube that is painted pink on the inside for the ears

5. Cut three 1/4" slits in the base of each ear and bend back the flaps to create gluing tabs

6. Cut four 1-1/2" long sections from the tubes for the legs, trim each leg to fit the contour of the bottle

7. Attach the legs, ears, the googly eyes, and the button nose with the tacky glue; let dry

8. Have a parent or adult cut a rectangular coin slot in the pig's back using a craft knife

9. Wind the pipe cleaner around a finger to make a curly tail shape and glue it in place

10. Trim the legs even so the "piggy" will stand flat

Tip: When you are ready to break into your "piggy bank," just cut a flap on the underside of the bank with a craft knife.
