Supplies You Need:

Cigar box
String (like baker's string or kite string)
Elmer's glue or craft glue
Felt
Aluminum foil
Shoe polish (black)


Directions:

1. Make designs with the string on the outside of the cigar box, by cutting strings of various lengths, dipping them into a small bowl of glue and arranging them in curly type designs. Do the top (lid) and all four sides. Allow to dry overnight.

2. Cover the same surfaces with aluminum foil. Cut 2 pieces - one big enough to cover the top and back, with about 1/2" excess so that it can be folded around lid edges to the underside of the lid. The other piece should be a strip long enough to cover the left, front and right sides, again allowing 1/2" excess on both the top and bottom edges, so that it can be folded inside and onto the bottom. Carefully crinkle up the aluminum foil as the crinkles add to the antique appearance. Now straighten it out, and cover the dull side with glue and glue in place on the cigar box, carefully folding and gluing the excess as described above. Repeat for the side piece. Allow to dry overnight.

3. Dab shoe polish onto the foil and wipe it off. This leaves black in the deep crevices and shiny silver flat spaces.

4. Line the inside with felt, of your color of choice. Glue the felt in place.

5. Make a handle by gluing a large bead in the center of the front edge of the lid.
