Recycled Crafts

Keep vs. Toss

Go green with your homemade crafts. Recycled crafts that the entire family will enjoy making, and organization tips that will include recycling items you have around the house.

Keep food packaging for clever storage. Styrofoam or cardboard produce trays are perfect for corralling in-process projects, while lidded jars, tins, and boxes can hold trinkets--for free.

Keep silica gel packets from shoe boxes; slip them into your fabric stash to minimize humidity. Avoid keeping supplies in a basement or garage where temperatures fluctuate.

Keep an extension cord handy so your electric tools (hot-glue gun, hobby drill) are always able to reach the power.

Toss dried-out paints or glues, crinkled papers, faded fabrics, and other damaged supplies yearly. Donate any unused supplies in good condition to a day-care center, retirement home, community arts council, or crafty friend.

Keep wrapping- paper scraps for year-round use. Small sheets are perfect for creating custom gift tags, scrapbooking, and decoupaging. Lay pieces flat (or carefully fold), and store in an expandable accordion folder near the rest of your wrapping supplies.

Toss abused gift wrap (even if it's in a supercute pattern), battered bags, and dog-eared boxes. If the packaging is mangled, it will only detract from your nice gesture. That said, wrinkled fabric ribbons can be saved: Iron them on a low heat (you may need a spritz of water) to smooth them out.

Keep unusual papers and trinkets. Recycle magazines and maps to swathe gifts, then salvage ornaments, costume jewelry, and tiny toys to tie on for a personal touch.

Helpful Tip: Stores don't stock items forever, and product names change (especially those of paints), so check before starting a project to make sure you have enough materials to finish it.
