Styrofoam Crafts

Cheery Memo Minder

Add a smile to your desk with styrofoam crafts! This cheery memo minder will make kids happy to keep track of notes and messages. Fun and easy craft that can be made for your teacher, mom, dad, or for your best friend!

Supplies You Need:

4" styrofoam ball

Acrylic paint (your choice of color; can use lime green for a "boy" and pink or purple for a "girl")

9 chenille stems (found at any arts and crafts store)

Felt scraps in 2 colors

Googly eyes

Craft glue

12" ribbon (for girl)

Directions:

1. Use a serrated knife to slice 1/2" off one side of the ball. Paint the ball; let dry. Curl one end of each chenille stem into a flat circle 1-1/2" across. Cut the stems so they are 5" long. Stick the stems into the top of the strofoam ball in two rows.

2. For "boy" memo holder, cut 2 felt circles slightly larger than the googly eyes and glue behind the eyes. Glue eyes to the ball. Cut a nose shape and mouth shape out of the felt and glue in place on the ball.

3. For "girl" memo holder, using dark colored felt, cut felt arcs, 3/4" wide, and cut fringes along top for eyelashes. Glue behind eyes. Tie a ribbon and glue on beneath chenille stems for her bow.

4. Disply favorite photos or messages!!

Tip: Cheer-Up Game

On large squares of paper, draw a series of faces with different unhappy expressions--sad, angry, scared, sick (one expression for every child in the game). Put the faces in a basket and have kids take turns choosing a face then acting out the feeling shown. For example, a "sad" child might pretend to cry. It's the job of the other children to help her feel better. They may ask questions like, "why are you sad?" or "how can I help?" Then have the child with the "face" explain why he or she is "sad." They other children then may offer help, such as a hug or a snack.

This teaches children empathy. Until children know how it feels to have their feelings hurt, they won't understand why it's important to treat others with respect and kindness.
