Thanksgiving Day Crafts

"Leaf Banner"

Fun-to-make Thanksgiving Day crafts are a great party activity that children can take home for their own family celebration. These activities will also keep your children busy while you are busy preparing the holiday meal!

This project is easy-to-do and is a fantastic way to signal the turn of the seasons and it could be a great welcome gift for any Thanksgiving host.

Supplies You Need:

Felt pieces in a variety of colors

Pair of scissors

Craft glue

Thick colored yarn or string

4 buttons (any size or color-possibly leaf shaped buttons)

12-inch dowell with 1/2-inch diameter

Directions:

1. Cut a piece of felt into an 11 x 17-inch retangle for the banner base

2. Trace real leaves (or use a leaf template) onto contrasting colors of felt, cut out, and glue onto the banner (about 7 leaves makes a nice banner depending on the leaf sizes)

3. Cut pieces of yarn to run along the edges of the banner; cross at the corners where they meet, glue in place and glue buttons on the corners

4. Cut two 2 x 4-inch pieces of felt for the hangers, fold in half and glue to the backside of the banner

5. Let the banner dry completely and slip the dowel through the hangers

TIP: Have a special Thanksgiving table just for children. A card table set up with a tablecloth on it is perfect. Have your children decorate the rim of paper plates or a vinyl or paper tablecloth with fall stickers while they are waiting.

TIP: Plan activities such as making decorations or playing a special video to keep children entertained while you are preparing the meal.

TIP: Help children understand the meaning of the holiday by having them write down something that they are thankful for before they begin their meal. You can help them develop a "Thanksgiving attitude" before the special day by making a paper chain ( paper chain craft ) with 14 links. Two weeks prior to Thanksgiving, have the children remove one link every evening and have them say something they are thankful for that day.
