Valentine Craft Idea

Here's a Valentine craft idea kid's will love. The key to a "successful" children's party is remembering who the party is for-the kids. Fun decorating ideas and and awesome munchies!!

Children want fun, giggles, and a few surprises rather than an elaborate celebration. Their idea of a successful party may be different from your own. The cake may flop, the camera may not flash, the pinata may burst before anyone has a chance to swing at it, but your child may still say, "Mom, that was the best party ever!"

"Valentine Chocolate Sandwich Cookies"

Ingredients You Need:

Cookies

3/4 cup sugar

1-3/4 cup flour

3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa

1/2 tsp. baking soda

3/4 tsp. salt

15 Tbsp. unsalted butter, at room temperature and cut into cubes

Filling

8 Tbsp. unsalted butter

Pinch of salt

2-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar

Red food coloring

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, using an electric mixer on low speed, combine sugar, flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Gradually add butter; slowly increase mixer speed to medium. Mixture will look crumbly at first, but continue mixing for about 8 minutes and it will come together in large clumps.

2. Transfer dough to a well-floured work surface and knead briefly, then press into a small rectangle. Cut dough in half. Working with one piece at a time, roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using a 1-1/2-inch round cutter, cut circles. Gather up scraps, reroll and cut as many cookies as possible.

3. Bake cookies for 6 minutes, then rotate pans (top to bottom and front to back) and bake 6 minutes longer. Remove baking sheets from oven and place on wire racks for a few minutes to cool before transferring cookies to racks to cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough.

4. To make filling: In a large bowl, using an electric mixer on high speed, beat butter until light and fluffy. Reduce the speed to low and gradually add salt and confectioners' sugar. Add food coloring, drop by drop, until filling takes on desired pink hue. Transfer filling to a pastry bag. Pipe filling onto half the cookies, then sandwich them together with remaining cookies.

5. Finish them off by rolling edges in sprinkles!! A great Valentine craft idea.

"Heart-Shaped Marshmallows"

Ingredients You Need:

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/4 cup confectioners' sugar

3 Tbsp. plain gelatin

1-1/2 cups sugar

1 cup light corn syrup

1/4 tsp. salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Red food coloring, optional

Directions:

1. In a bowl, mix cornstarch and confectioners' sugar. Grease a 9-by-13-inch baking pan, then dust with some of the cornstarch mixure, reserving the rest. Pour 1/2 cup cold water into a bowl; sprinkle gelatin on top.

2. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup and salt. Bring to a boil. Continue cooking until mixture registers 260 degrees on a candy thermometer, about 7 minutes. Immediately remove from heat and, with an electric mixer running on medium-high speed, pour into bowl with gelatin mixture

3. Continue beating until mixture has quadrupled in volume, about 5 minutes. Add vanilla, then food coloring, drop by drop until marshmallow is desired shade of pink. Continue beating for 4 minutes longer, then transfer marshmallow to prepared baking pan. Working quickly, use a silicone spatula or long offset spatula to spread marshmallow before it sets. Cover pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours.

4. Sift some remaining cornstarch mixture over a baking sheet. Lift marshmallow from the pan in one single sheet, placing it face down on cornstarch-sugar mixture. Use a lightly greased heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut marshmallow, dusting edges of hearts as you go with more of the remaining cornstarch-sugar mixture to prevent them from sticking. Marshmallows will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

5. Place marshmallows in pink or red paper cupcake liners to serve! Another great Valentine craft idea.

Here are more Valentine craft idea:

Hang Onto Your Heart Game Give each child two saucers and two straws. Put five conversation candy hearts (or cinnamon heart candies, if you want to game to be more difficult) into one of the saucers. At the signal to begin, each child has to use his or her straws as chopsticks, picking up one piece of candy at a time and tranporting it to the other saucer, about 5-inches away. If it's dropped between the two saucers, the candy must be picked up by hand, put back into the first saucer, and the player must start over. The first player to get all of his or her hearts in the second saucer wins. As a variation, you can divide the children into relay teams.

Candy Charades Fill a bowl with conversation candy hearts which have short sayings such as "I Love You," "Be Mine," and "Sealed With A Kiss." Each child takes a turn to select one of the candies and tries to pantomime its message. If someone correctly guesses the message within the chosen time frame, the "mime" gets to eat the candy. You can play this game with teams, giving a prize to the team who guesses the most answers in the least amount of time; or you can let each child take a turn in front of the group.

Another great Valentine craft idea for decorating is to nest one vase inside another, and fill the space between them with candy conversation hearts, then put beautiful roses or tulips inside the middle vase filled with water!!
